Squirt BBQ ChickenI absolutely LOVE Squirt. It’s a grapefruity citrus soda from the 50’s that can be very hard to get in my area. I’ve found a good supply, but it’s a 5 hour drive away.

When I found this recipe for Squirt Barbecue Chicken, I knew I just had to try it.

Ingredients

4 pounds of chicken parts
1 cup Squirt
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1 tablespoon parsley flakes
1 tablspoon instant minced onion
2 tablespoons Lawry’s seasoned salt
1 teaspoon rosemary (crushed)
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon MSG (omit if you are prone to migraines!)

Instructions

Build the marinade by adding all ingredients (but the chicken) in a zip style freezer bag. Mix well. Be careful, there’s bubbly soda in there!

Add chicken. Squeeze air out of the bag and seal. Refrigerate 3 hours to overnight, occasionally taking out the bag and mixing to re-coat all chicken parts.

Take the chicken out and slap it on a medium hot grill. While you can’t overcook chicken, you can dry it out too much. Use an instant read thermometer to get your chicken to 165° F in the thickest part to be sure it’s done.

Optional: Pour the marinade into a saucepan and boil for a few minutes and use to baste the chicken during the last few minutes of cooking. It’s got sugary soda which will char if used to baste continuously.
